LEGISLATIVE EFFORTS TO ESTABLISH THE PCN AS A PUBLIC ENTITY

The Peace Corps of Nigeria has since coming into existence over two decades ago demonstrated a high level of resilience and commitment to building the capacity of the youths geared towards nation-building. It is in view of its value-driven programs aimed at improving the socio-economic well-being of the youths and its laudable achievements, nationally and internationally, that the National Assembly introduced a Bill for an Act to Establish the Nigerian Peace Corps in order to give statutory backing to the Organization. The Bill received wide acceptability and overwhelming support during the public hearings and was passed by both the 8th and 9th National Assembly. Unfortunately, the Bill was among the 64 high profiled Bills which were unattended to by His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, the then President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria before handing over to his successor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. However, the Bill is among those returned to the 10th National Assembly for re-committal.

Consequently, the Bill is now being subjected to re-committal process by the National Assembly. After its eventual passage, it will be transmitted to His Excellency, the President and Commander in Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for Assent.
