Founder, Dr Dickson Akoh

Dr Dickson A.O. Akoh, FCITr, FCPA, FNSIS, fnli, the Founder and Pioneer National Commandant of Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN), was born in Dodan Barracks, Obalende, Lagos State, on the 10th of July, 1973, to the family of Mr Simon A. Ojonye, a retired Army Warrant Officer.

Perhaps, it was growing up in military barracks, vis-à-vis his foundational education at Army Children School that moulded Dr Akoh's personality into a young man of astute character and strict discipline, as well as a sterling apostle of peace.

In his burning passion to address youth restiveness and the challenges of nation-building, Akoh observed that the dearth of comprehensive and practical orientation programmes, which would serve as social mechanisms to assist the youth to cope with the many challenges of the 21st century, constituted a huge impediment to the positive development of the Nigerian youth.

Hence, spurred by the need to fill the void by providing a veritable platform for genuine and practical character development and empowerment of the youth, while addressing the social challenges confronting young persons in Nigeria, Dr Akoh took the historical step of establishing the Peace Corps of Nigeria; at Kaduna, Nigeria in 1998.

Akoh's quest for further academic laurels found expression at the University of Abuja, where he obtained a B.Sc. (Hons) Degree in Sociology and an M. Sc. in Criminology. He was also later conferred with a Doctorate of Philosophy (Humanities), by the Commonwealth University, Belize, South America.

In further evaluation of Dr Akoh's towering contributions to peace, security and youth empowerment among others, the Governing Board and Senate of the Freedom University and Theological Seminary, Pottstown, P.A., United States, in 2020, conferred on him the award of Professorship in Social Works.

Since 2012, following the grant of a Special Consultative Status to the Peace Corps of Nigeria by the United Nations (UN), Akoh became Head of the Statutory PCN Delegation to the UN Headquarters in New York, United States of America, as well as the global body's regional offices in Geneva, Switzerland and Vienna, Austria. Aside having a desk in each of the aforementioned offices, Akoh has over the years, led delegations of the PCN to attend several United Nations' Conferences and Meetings, including the United Nations General Assembly across the world.

To further give credence to Akoh's works at the international level, the African Union Economic, Social and Cultural Council (AU-ECOSOCC), which had earlier granted PCN a Special Consultative Status, appointed Akoh as the Head of its Peace and Security Cluster Committee in Nigeria in 2020.

A recipient of over 120 Awards/Honours from different reputable national and international organisations/ institutions, Dr Akoh holds the following awards, among many others:
